ARCA Menards Series

Reaves Defends Madison Title • Championship Battle Tightens • v2.0 Update
Madison International Speedway
Friday, August 28, 2026
DEFENDING WINNER: Max Reaves (No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing)
TV/STREAM: FS1 / FOX Sports App
STAGES/BREAKS: Laps 75 / 125 / 200
🚨 TECHNICAL ALLOTMENT & CONTROLLED RESTART IMPRESSION: Per the official ARCA Rulebook and Crew Chief Handout, the field is strictly capped at a maximum of 26 starters plus provisionals (EIRI). Teams must comply with a maximum tire allotment of 12 tires total for the event, combining practice tires brought from home and sets purchased at the track. So What? This severe restriction limits teams to just three sets of Goodyear radials for practice, qualifying, and 200 laps of racing. Crew chiefs must implement strict tire conservation strategies, especially since tire management is paramount over the abrasive half-mile pavement. Additionally, the race features a modified controlled break procedure with breaks occurring at or near laps 75 and 125, during which no adding or moving tires to or from the pit box is allowed once the race starts. This mechanics-only constraint prevents teams from recovering from early-race flats, amplifying the risk of catastrophic tire wear.

Tech Section: Ilmor 396 Spec V8 & Chassis Adaptation

The transition from the high-dirt friction, heavy slip angles, and deep cushions of the Springfield Mile to Madison's high-banked paved short oval requires an immediate pivot in chassis setups.

Chassis Setup & Aerodynamics: Following dirt-track operations, teams must replace heavy dirt filtration grilles with high-downforce front splitters to clean up frontal airflow and optimize front-end downforce. Concurrently, mechanics must stiffen the right-side suspension to absorb the massive cornering loads generated in the banking. Why? Without high-downforce splitters, the car will suffer from extreme aerodynamic understeer (nose washout) in lapped traffic, and without right-side suspension stiffness, the car will roll too far and bottom out on the frame. So What? Teams that master this setup pivot will achieve superior center-corner rotation, allowing drivers to pass on the bottom lane rather than getting stuck in the aerodynamic wake of lapped cars.

Engine Specifications & Gear Ratios: All entries utilize the 396-cubic-inch Ilmor 396 ARCA Spec V8 engine equipped with Holley EFI, producing roughly 700 horsepower. Teams pair this powerplant with low rear-end gear ratios. Why? The Ilmor V8 combined with low rear-end gearing maximizes instantaneous throttle response and torque multiplication out of the corners. So What? This mechanical configuration accelerates the car's launch off Madison's tight, sweeping corners, making throttle control and rear-tire traction off the corner the decisive variables in maintaining a championship pace.

Goodyear Tire Package (D-Series Short-Track Radials): Teams run the ARCA-coded D-series short-track radial compound specifically engineered for high-load, short-track paved ovals. Why? Madison's abrasive asphalt creates moderate right-rear thermal degradation. So What? Corner-exit drive will drop off significantly after 35-lap green-flag runs, making tire conservation during the opening 75-lap stint absolutely critical. Drivers who abuse their right-rear tire early will find themselves defenseless on the long run.

Teamwork & Garage Telemetry:
  • Joe Gibbs Racing (#18): Utilizing the exact same chassis geometry that Max Reaves took to victory lane at Madison last season. Why? To establish a stable baseline focusing setup telemetry on center-corner rotation. So What? Reaves enters with a proven mathematical model, allowing crew chief Matt Ross to focus on fine-tuning track-bar adjustments as temperatures fall.
  • Nitro Motorsports (#20 & #70): Implementing twin-chassis data sharing between championship leader Jake Bollman and challenger Thomas Annunziata. Why? To optimize right-rear wedge and cross-weight adjustments in real-time. So What? Sharing data minimizes setup errors, neutralizing the risk of a single-car setup failure and protecting their 1-2 points position.

Weekend Intelligence History (Cumulative Archive): As this is the v2 Initial Cumulative Pre-Race Update, there are no prior session logs (such as practice or qualifying times) to archive. However, the historical baseline from the 2025 event serves as our "Hard Asset" reference:
  • Max Reaves (#18 JGR Toyota) dominated the 2025 race, starting on the outside pole and leading 199 of 200 laps to claim what was his second career national series victory. This confirms the JGR perimeter chassis has an elite mechanical rotation signature at this facility.
  • Isabella Robusto (#55 Nitro Motorsports Toyota) finished a strong 4th at Madison last season, demonstrating high lateral tire-saving discipline through the 18-degree banking.
  • The 2025 event marked the return of the ARCA Menards Series to Madison following a six-year absence, confirming "Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile" as a premier short-track testing ground.
