New for 2026: NASCAR has increased horsepower on short tracks (under 1.5 miles) from 670hp to 750HP.
The Impact: On a frozen quarter-mile track, this power hike will cause extreme wheel spin. Throttle control becomes the primary differentiator over aero-dependency.
Thermal Shock: With ambient temps near 11°F, rapid heating of rotors causes cracking. Because this is an Impound Race, teams cannot change parts between sessions freely.
Low Pressure: To generate grip in sub-freezing temps, Joe Gibbs Racing is experimenting with running left-side tire pressures in the single digits (near flat) to maximize the contact patch.
Nitrogen Mandatory: Pressure builds by 23 PSI during a run. Teams must use dry nitrogen to prevent moisture expansion.
Melt/Refreeze: While 40 truckloads of snow were removed, daytime melting will refreeze into ice on roads tonight.
Wet Weather Tires: Goodyear wet-weather compounds are available. NASCAR will run on a damp track but will stop for active rain/snow (forecasted for 8 PM).
